May 12, 2009 Prof. Mehmet Haberal, Founder and President of our internationally renowned University, is a man who has devoted himself to humanity and the health of mankind, to the advancement of education and health care in our country successfully raising Turkey to new heights as a modern civilization, who has been a defender of the parliamentary system with an unparalleled patriotism and love for his nation, and who has even turned down the position of greatest honor in our country, the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, due to his respect for and belief in the Parliament. The detainment and subsequent arrest of Prof. Haberal, in relation to the unfounded allegations that have been brought against him linking him to a terrorist organization, have no basis in reality and are yet to be proven, and as such is irreconcilable with the principles of law, human rights and civil liberties and unbefitting to the notion of justice in our country. It should not be forgotten that the current situation will open a deep wound in the history of democracy, law and freedom in our country. We respectfully announce to the general public that we await the return of our President, whose only goal has been to serve humanity in the fields of health and education, and that we shall seek justice in every arena. Thank you for your sensitivity and attention to this matter.
