April 13, 2009 Founder and President of our university, Prof. Dr. Mehmet HABERAL and member of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Fatih Hilmioğlu have been taken into custody on Monday, April 13, 2009 at 09:30 in relation to the ongoing investigations by the public prosecution into the Ergenekon armed terrorist organization. The detainment of our President, a man who finds seven days a week twenty-four hours a day insufficient for production and action, the creator of Baskent University where ten thousand students are currently in education, who has established sixteen hospitals and health facilities in fourteen different regions of our country, who accepts Ataturk’s nationalism and revolutionary spirit as his unfailing guide in all aspects of his life and expressions, and who has in these past years observed the diversion from these principles in our country with great sorrow, and who defends and voices Ataturk’s principles through the medium of Kanal B (Channel B), the television station which he established, is very meaningful indeed. The detainments and arrests, which have been carried out in our country in a planned manner for some time, are not only directed at the accused who are a flight risk. Minds that can think and produce are being arrested and detained. It is sad indeed that a physician and scientist, who gives life to many people each week through the kidney and liver transplants which he personally performs, has been detained from his work. As the Baskent University Senate, in preserving our belief in the principle of the rule of law in our country and the validity of the supremacy of the legal system, we violently condemn these extrajudicial practices, and we respectfully announce to the public that we maintain our support for our President and will protect and continue his work to the very end.
