TURKISH TRANSPLANTATION SOCIETY
ANNOUNCEMENT TO THE PUBLIC

February 16, 2010

Prof. Mehmet Haberal, President of the Turkish Transplantation Society and The Transplantation Society Councilor of the Middle East and North Africa had made all the necessary preparations submitted a bid to hold the 2016 Scientific Congress of the Transplantation Society in Istanbul, Turkey, under the sponsorship of Baskent University and its institutions. A minimum of 5000 participants attend these meetings. Unfortunately, when the executive committee of the society was ready to come to a decision regarding the bids, Dr. Haberal was unfairly deprived of his freedom based on purposefully false allegations and slander.

In September 2009, the President of the society, Prof. Jeremy Chapman sent a message to Dr. Haberal, informing him that he would do his utmost to continue to delay the decision, but that it would not be possible to do so after January 2010.

Unfortunately, as Dr. Haberal has been and continues to be deprived of his freedoms for more than ten months, Dr. Chapman sent a message to Dr. Haberal informing him with great sorrow that they could wait no longer, and that a vote would take place between Bangkok in Thailand, and Buenos Aires in Argentina. He also expressed that it would be impossible to come to any other decision with Dr. Haberal unable to provide his exemplary international leadership while incarcerated.

Thus, I see it as my duty to protest to the public against those who have hindered an international organization that would otherwise have made great social and economic contributions to the scientific activities, publicity, and tourism of our country.

Prof. Hamdi Karakayali
General Secretary of the Turkish Transplantation Society
